The Reverse Pivot: A Backswing Weight Mistake

A reverse pivot moves your weight toward the target in the backswing and away from it coming down. Here is what it looks like on camera and what it costs.

A reverse pivot is a backswing in which your weight moves toward the target instead of away from it, leaving you to fall back away from the target on the way down. It is the correct pressure pattern run backwards, and it shows up clearly in a face-on video.

What is a reverse pivot in the golf swing?

A reverse pivot is a backswing where pressure moves onto the lead foot instead of the trail foot, and then reverses in the downswing so that pressure ends up on the trail foot at impact. The whole pattern runs the wrong way round: weight goes forward when it should go back, and back when it should go forward.

The correct pattern is unremarkable and worth stating plainly. Going back, pressure moves toward the trail side. In transition it moves toward the lead side. By impact the majority of it is on the lead foot, and by the finish nearly all of it is. The sample swing in SwingOK's P1–P10 sequence records roughly 90% lead-side pressure at follow-through for exactly that reason.

A reverse pivot inverts it. That is the whole definition. Everything else — the spine angle, the high lead shoulder, the contact — is a consequence of that inversion, not a separate fault.

What does a reverse pivot look like on camera?

At the top of the backswing, the spine leans toward the target rather than away from it, the lead shoulder sits higher than it should, and the head has usually drifted toward the target. The upper body is stacked over the lead foot at the moment it should be stacked over the trail foot.

Three things to look for in a still frame at the top:

  • Spine direction. Draw a line up through the hips and the head. In a reverse pivot it tips toward the target. In the ordinary pattern it tips away from it.
  • Lead shoulder height. The lead shoulder should be the lower of the two at the top. A reverse pivot often leaves it level or high.
  • Head position. Compare the head against its address position. Drift toward the target during the backswing is the giveaway.

There is a second, later signature. Because the weight has to go somewhere in the downswing, it goes backwards — you will see the golfer hanging back, the trail foot still loaded at impact, and often the upper body leaning away from the target while the arms throw at the ball.

How do I spot a reverse pivot in a face-on clip?

Film face-on, square to the golfer, and step through to the top of the backswing. Compare that frame against the address frame using a vertical reference — a door frame, a bag, or an on-screen line. If the head and upper body have moved toward the target while the hips have not, that is the pattern.

The step-by-step check:

  1. Set the camera face-on, roughly belt height, square to the target line. This is the angle that resolves the movement; down-the-line shows different things and largely hides this one.
  2. Pause at address and note where the head sits against a fixed vertical.
  3. Step forward to the top — one frame at a time if the clip is fast enough.
  4. Compare. Head and sternum moved toward the target? Lead shoulder level or high? Spine leaning targetward? That is a reverse pivot.
  5. Step on to impact. Look at the trail foot. If the heel is still down and loaded while the upper body leans away from the target, the pattern has completed itself.

At 30 or 60 fps you can usually see the top clearly enough for this check, because the top is the slowest moment in the swing. The transition is where a higher frame rate starts to matter.

Is a reverse pivot the same as a small hip turn?

No. They are different measurements. Hip turn describes how far the pelvis has rotated; a reverse pivot describes where pressure has moved. A golfer can rotate the pelvis a long way and still load the wrong foot, and a golfer with a modest hip turn can load correctly.

This confusion is common because both are discussed as "the lower body in the backswing", and both are visible in the same face-on frame. They are not interchangeable. If you are working from measured angles, shoulder and hip turn and the separation between them are rotation numbers and will not, on their own, tell you which foot is loaded.

The practical consequence: fixing a reverse pivot is not a matter of turning the hips more or less. It is a matter of where pressure goes and when.

What does a reverse pivot do to the ball?

It usually produces a steep angle of attack and inconsistent low point, which means thin shots, fat shots, and both from the same swing on different days. It also costs speed, because the sequence never gets to unwind from the ground up, and it tends to send the club across the ball.

Taking those one at a time:

  • Steep angle of attack. Weight stacked over the lead side at the top means the club comes down more vertically than it otherwise would.
  • Unstable low point. Because the body moves backwards through impact, the bottom of the arc moves around. That is a direct route to topping the ball or catching it fat.
  • Lost speed. Speed comes from the sequence unwinding in order. A body falling backwards is not delivering that sequence.
  • Pulls and slices. Hanging back throws the arms out and across, so the path tends to move left of the target for a right-handed golfer. Combined with an open face that is a slice; with a square-to-path face it is a pull.

Note the direction of the reasoning here. These are consequences that follow from a body moving backwards through the strike. They are the pattern's fingerprints, not separate faults to chase individually.

What drills help with a reverse pivot?

Movement patterning drills — ones that let you feel where pressure is at each point in the swing, without adding anything physical. The two most common are a trail-heel awareness drill at the top and a step-through drill that forces the weight to arrive on the lead side before the club does.

Trail-heel awareness. Make slow backswings and pay attention only to the trail heel. The intent is to notice pressure arriving under it as you go back, rather than under the lead foot. Stop at the top, check where you feel loaded, then set up again. This is a feedback exercise, not an exercise programme — the point is only to notice.

The step-through. Start with your feet together. Swing back, and as you start down, step toward the target with the lead foot before the club reaches the ball. It is hard to step onto the lead foot and simultaneously fall away from the target, which is why the drill makes the pattern obvious. Start with slow, short swings.
