How to Fix a Slice: A Complete Diagnostic Guide

A slice is the clubface open to the club path at impact. Learn to tell your pull-slice from your push-slice, find the real cause, and drill the right fix.

A slice is one thing and one thing only: the clubface pointing right of the direction the club is travelling at impact. That gap — face relative to path — puts sidespin on the ball and bends it right. Grip, alignment, transition and release all matter, but only because they open that gap.

Every ball-flight description on this page assumes a right-handed golfer. If you play left-handed, mirror it: swap every "left" for "right" and every "right" for "left". The mechanics are identical.

What actually causes a slice?

A slice happens when the clubface is open relative to the club path at impact. The ball starts near where the face points and curves away from the path, so a face that points right of the path tilts the spin axis right and the ball bends right. Everything else is upstream of that one relationship.

That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth sitting with because it explains things that otherwise look contradictory. A golfer swinging violently left across the ball can slice. A golfer swinging well out to the right can also slice. Both have the same face-to-path relationship — face open to path — arrived at from opposite directions.

The modern ball-flight description used here is a model, not a measurement of your particular swing. It describes what a ball does given a face angle, a path and a centred strike. Off-centre contact adds gear effect, and that can move a ball sideways for reasons that have nothing to do with your path. If you are unsure whether you are hitting the centre of the face, put impact tape or foot spray on the clubface before you diagnose anything else.

What are the three different slices?

They are the pull-slice (starts left, curves right), the push-slice (starts right, curves further right), and the straight-start slice (starts near target, curves right late). All three share an open face-to-path. They differ in what the path is doing, which is why they need different corrections.

Read your own ball flight over five or six shots with a mid-iron before you decide. One shot is noise. Look at two things separately: where the ball starts, and which way it bends from there.

The pull-slice is the classic amateur miss. The club travels left across the ball, the face is left of target but still right of that leftward path, and the ball starts left then peels back right. The frustrating part is that a badly struck pull-slice can end up roughly on target, which hides the problem for years.

The push-slice is much rarer among high handicappers and much more common among golfers who have already been told to "swing more from the inside". They fixed the path and never fixed the face. The ball now starts right and keeps going right, which feels worse and often is worse.

The straight-start slice usually belongs to a golfer whose path is close to neutral and whose face simply arrives a few degrees open. It is the easiest of the three to fix, because there is only one variable to move.

Which way round do you swing?

This reads a described ball flight back as a club delivery, using the standard relationship between face, path and curve. It is not a measurement — a launch monitor or a slow-motion clip is what settles it. Nothing here is instruction about how to move your body.

Why does aiming left make the slice worse?

Because aiming left rotates your whole swing corridor left, and the path follows the shoulders. You then need an even bigger leftward path to hit the ball, which widens the face-to-path gap and adds curve. Every compensation you make for the slice makes the geometry that produces it stronger.

This is the trap. It goes like this. You slice, so you aim thirty yards left. The ball still finishes right, so next week you aim forty yards left. Your shoulders are now aimed well left at address, your downswing path is steeper and more out-to-in than it was, and the curve has increased to match. You have made the disease worse while treating the symptom.

Breaking the loop is uncomfortable, because the first honest swing you make from a square setup will go straight left of your new aim. That is not a new fault. That is the pull that was always underneath the slice, now visible because you removed the compensation. Aim square, accept a week of pulls, and fix the face and the path from there.

Check your alignment with a club on the ground pointing at the target and a second one across your toes, then film yourself from behind. A down-the-line camera angle is the only view that shows whether your feet, hips and shoulders actually match what you think they do.

How does grip cause a slice?

A lead hand rotated too far under the grip — a "weak" grip — leaves the clubface open at impact unless your hands do extra work on the way down. If you can see fewer than two knuckles of your lead hand at address, the face has to rotate further to square up in the same amount of time.

Grip is the first thing to check because it is the cheapest thing to change and it sits upstream of everything else. Look down at address. On a neutral-to-slightly-strong lead hand you should see two or three knuckles, and the V formed by your thumb and forefinger should point somewhere between your chin and your trail shoulder.

The trail hand matters too, but differently. A trail hand sitting too far on top of the grip tends to drag the club over the top in transition — a path problem disguised as a grip problem.

Change the grip in small steps. Rotating your lead hand a quarter turn will feel enormous and will, for a session or two, produce hooks. That is the correct sign. It means the face can now close, and your hands have not yet stopped over-rotating to compensate for an openness that no longer exists.

Is it my swing path or my clubface?

Read the start line. If the ball starts left of your target, the face was left of target at impact and your path was further left still — a path problem. If it starts right, the face was open to the target — a face problem. The curve tells you the size of the gap, not which one is wrong.

This distinction decides your whole practice plan, so it is worth ten minutes and a phone. Film face-on and down-the-line, and watch the first ten feet of ball flight rather than where it lands. Landing position mixes start line, curve, wind and slope. Start line is close to pure face angle.

What in my swing is opening the face or the path?

Five patterns account for most slices: an over-the-top transition, early extension, casting, a cupped lead wrist at the top, and a stalled body through impact. Each one either sends the path left or leaves the face open, and several of them travel together in the same swing.

Over the top. The club moves out and over the plane at the start of the downswing because the upper body starts the sequence instead of the lower body. The result is an out-to-in path and, usually, a pull-slice. This is the single most common structural cause, and it has its own full breakdown.

Early extension. The hips push toward the ball in the downswing, closing the space your arms need. The arms have nowhere to go but out and around, so the path goes left. Early extension often shows up as a slice on good strikes and a shank or a thin on bad ones.

Casting. The wrist angle you built in the backswing releases too early, so the clubhead passes the hands well before impact. A cupped lead wrist at the top. Lead-wrist extension at the top adds loft and opens the face, and unless something closes it on the way down, the face arrives open. This is the quietest of the five, because it happens at a position most golfers never look at. Wrist flexion, extension and the clubface covers the relationship in detail.

A stalled body. If your rotation stops through impact, the club has to go somewhere. It either flips closed — a hook — or the arms fold and the face stays open, which is where the chicken wing comes from. The chicken wing is worth understanding early, because it is a symptom of an open face rather than a cause of one.

Which drill fixes my slice?

Match the drill to the cause. Path problems need transition and sequencing drills. Face problems need grip and release drills. Doing release work on a path problem, or path work on a face problem, produces the two-way miss — you fix one variable while the other stays wrong.

These are movement-patterning drills. They change a motor pattern with slow, deliberate repetition; none of them are physical training and none of them need speed.

For an out-to-in path

  1. The headcover gate. Put a headcover on the ground about a grip-length outside and slightly behind the ball, angled so a neutral path misses it and an out-to-in path hits it. Make half swings until you can miss it ten times in a row. Feedback is immediate and honest.
  2. The pump drill. Take the club to the top, then pump down to about hip height three times, feeling the trail elbow drop in front of the trail hip rather than out toward the ball. On the fourth pump, hit the shot. This is the core over-the-top drill and is covered further in the over-the-top article.
  3. Step-through. Set up with your feet together, start the backswing, and step your lead foot toward the target as the club reaches the top. You cannot start a step-through swing with your shoulders. The lower body has to lead, which is exactly the sequence you are after.

For an open face

  1. Knuckles check. At address, look down and count knuckles on the lead hand. Two is a working reference. Set it, hit five balls, reset it. The point is repetition of the setup, not the swing.
  2. Split-hand release. Grip with your hands two inches apart and make slow half swings, letting the trail forearm rotate over the lead through impact. You are patterning rotation, not adding speed. Keep it under half speed.
  3. Face-square-to-the-arc rehearsals. Make slow swings from hip height to hip height, stopping at each end to check that the clubface matches the angle of your lead forearm rather than pointing at the sky. Do it in front of a mirror, without a ball.

For early extension

  1. Butt-on-the-chair drill. Set up with a chair back or an alignment stick touching your backside. Make slow swings that keep contact through the downswing. Losing contact early is early extension, and you will feel it the instant it happens.

How do I know the fix is working?

Watch the start line first, not the finish. If your pulls start straighter and the curve shrinks, the path is improving. If the start line stays left but the curve disappears, you have squared the face to a path that is still out-to-in — you now hit pulls, and the path is your next job.

Give each change three sessions before you judge it. A grip change or a transition change will make contact worse before it makes it better, because you are asking a well-grooved compensation to stop compensating.

Film every session from the same two angles at the same two distances so the swings are comparable. Guessing at what changed from memory is the reason most slice fixes fail. One more warning before you start. Do not work on the path and the face in the same session at the beginning. They interact, and if you move both at once you cannot tell which change produced which result. Pick the one your start line says is wrong, hold everything else still, and give it your full attention until the ball flight moves. Then reassess and pick the next one.
