Down-the-Line vs Face-On: Which Angle Shows What
Down-the-line video shows plane, path and shaft position. Face-on shows weight shift, low point and shaft lean. Using the wrong one is the top analysis error.
Down-the-line and face-on are the two standard swing camera angles, and they show different things. Down-the-line — filmed from behind, on the target line — shows swing plane, club path and shaft position. Face-on — filmed square to your chest — shows weight shift, low point, tempo and shaft lean.

What is the difference between down-the-line and face-on?
Down-the-line places the camera behind you, on or just outside the target line, filming along the direction the ball will travel. Face-on places it in front of you, perpendicular to that line, filming your chest. The two views are 90° apart, so what one flattens the other separates.
That geometry is the whole story. A camera can measure motion that crosses its field of view accurately, and it measures motion coming straight toward it very badly. Swing plane crosses a down-the-line camera and points almost directly at a face-on camera. Weight shift crosses a face-on camera and points almost directly at a down-the-line one.
Once you internalise that, you stop asking either angle for information it never had.
What does down-the-line video show?
Down-the-line shows everything about the club's relationship to the target line: swing plane, club path direction, shaft position at P2, P4 and P6, an over-the-top move in transition, and early extension of the hips toward the ball. It is the angle for diagnosing where the club travels.
Specifically, from behind you can see:
- Swing plane — the angle the shaft traces going back and coming down, and whether the downswing plane is steeper or shallower than the backswing plane.
- Club path — the direction the clubhead is travelling through impact relative to the target line. Combined with face angle, this is what shapes the shot; the ball-flight simulator shows the nine combinations.
- Shaft position at the checkpoints — clubhead inside or outside the hands at P2, across the line or laid off at P4, and where the shaft points at P6.
- Over the top — the club moving out and away from the body in transition, then cutting across the ball.
- Early extension — the hips pushing toward the ball line during the downswing, which crowds the arms and forces a compensation.
What does face-on video show?
Face-on shows how your body mass moves and where the club bottoms out: weight shift between the feet, sway and slide, spine angle and head position, shaft lean at impact, low point relative to the ball, and tempo. It is the angle for diagnosing when things happen and where the bottom of the arc is.
From the front you can see:
- Weight shift — the direction and timing of the pressure move from trail side to lead side, and whether it reverses.
- Sway and slide — lateral movement of the hips away from the target going back, or past the lead foot coming down, rather than rotation.
- Spine angle and head position — whether your head and upper body drift up, down or laterally through the swing.
- Shaft lean at impact — the shaft's forward tilt at P7, which is the visible signature of compression. See shaft lean at impact.
- Low point — where the club actually reaches the bottom of its arc relative to the ball. It is the mechanism behind topping the ball and behind fat shots.
- Tempo — backswing and downswing frame counts are easiest to read here, because the club's direction change is unambiguous.
Which angle shows what?
Use this table as the quick reference. A "Yes" means the angle can give you a measurement you can trust and act on. A "No" means the motion points at the lens rather than across it, so whatever you think you see is an artefact of the camera position rather than a fact about your swing.

"Partly" means you can form an impression but should not trust a measurement.
What is the most common swing analysis mistake?
Judging plane from a face-on clip, or judging weight shift from a down-the-line clip. Both are attempts to measure depth — motion toward or away from the lens — and a single camera cannot measure depth. The result looks like an answer and is actually an artefact of the angle.
From face-on, the shaft going back appears to rise almost vertically regardless of the plane it is really on, because the plane's tilt is mostly pointed at the camera. Two golfers on completely different planes can look identical from the front.
From down-the-line, your hips move mostly toward and away from the camera, so a large weight shift and almost none can produce nearly the same image. People routinely diagnose a slide from behind and get it backwards.
The same trap catches club path. Face-on gives you no usable read on whether the club is travelling left or right through impact, and it is a mistake worth naming because path is exactly what most golfers are trying to find.
Should I film both angles every time?
Film both when you are diagnosing something new, and film one when you are tracking a change you already understand. Two clips of the same swing from the two angles cover all ten P positions. One clip of the angle that matches your fault is enough for a check-in.
Practically: shoot face-on if you are working on strike quality, low point, shaft lean, weight transfer or tempo. Shoot down-the-line if you are working on path, plane, an over-the-top move or a curvature problem. If you are unsure why the ball is doing what it is doing, shoot both.
Do not try to split the difference. A camera placed at 45° gives you a distorted version of both views rather than a usable version of either, and it makes on-plane swings look steep and square faces look shut.
How do I set the camera up for each angle?
For down-the-line, put the camera on the target line behind you, roughly at hand height at address, far enough back to keep the clubhead in frame at the top. For face-on, put it square to your chest at about the same height, centred on the ball. Both need a fixed, level phone.
Height is the detail people get wrong most often. A phone on the ground looking up, or held at eye level looking down, changes the apparent shaft angle enough to invent faults that are not there. Consistency matters too: if you want to compare this week's swing to last week's, the camera has to be in the same place both times.
