Why You Top the Ball: Low Point Explained

You do not top the ball because you lifted your head. You top it because the low point of your swing arc is in the wrong place. Here is the real mechanism.

You top the ball because the lowest point of your swing arc is behind the ball, so the clubhead is already travelling upward when it arrives and the leading edge catches the ball above its centre. It is a low-point problem. It is almost never a head problem.

Why do I top the ball?

Because the club is not travelling downward when it reaches the ball. The bottom of your swing arc is behind the ball rather than in front of it, so by the time the clubhead gets there it is already rising, and the leading edge strikes the ball's equator instead of the ground beneath its back edge.

That is the entire mechanism. Everything else — early extension, casting, hanging back, a ball too far forward — is a route to that outcome. If you fix a route without moving low point, the topping continues; if low point moves in front of the ball, the topping stops regardless of which route caused it.

The topped shot and the thin shot are the same event at different severities. Catch the ball slightly above centre and it comes out low and hot. Catch it further up and it rolls along the ground. Same cause, different amount.

Does lifting your head cause topping?

Almost never. The head rising is usually a symptom of the body standing up through impact, not the thing that produced the poor strike. And the standard advice that follows from it — keep your head down — actively makes topping more likely, because holding the head down restricts rotation and pushes low point further back.

Here is the confusion. On a topped shot, video often does show the head coming up. What the video also shows, if you look below the neck, is the pelvis pushing toward the ball and the torso extending — the head is being carried up by the body. The head is a passenger.

Then the advice compounds it. A golfer who forces the head to stay down through impact cannot rotate the chest through the shot, so the arms have to run out of room. The result is a body that stalls and a club that flips upward through the strike. That is a topping machine.

What is low point, and where should it be?

Low point is the lowest position the clubhead reaches during the swing arc. For an iron off the turf it should sit slightly ahead of the ball — toward the target — so the club is still descending at contact and the divot starts in front of the ball. Behind the ball, and the club is already rising.

Picture the swing arc as a circle tilted forward, with your lead shoulder near its centre. The bottom of that circle is one point. Where that point falls along the ground, relative to the ball, is what determines your strike:

Two things move low point. The first is the centre of the arc — roughly, where your lead shoulder and upper body are located at impact. Move that centre backwards, away from the target, and the bottom of the arc goes with it. The second is the radius — the distance from that centre to the clubhead. If the radius grows before impact (arms and wrists straightening early) the club bottoms out sooner; if it shortens through impact, the club rises early.

So there are exactly two ways to top the ball: put the centre of the arc in the wrong place, or change the radius at the wrong time. Every cause below is one of those two.

What actually causes low point to sit behind the ball?

Five common patterns. Early extension and standing up move the centre of the arc; casting changes the radius too early; a reverse pivot leaves the centre behind the ball at impact; and a ball position too far forward can put the ball past a low point that was otherwise fine.

Early extension. The pelvis moves toward the ball through the downswing and the body straightens. The upper body has to back away to make room, which drags the centre of the arc away from the target. Low point moves back with it.

Standing up through impact. A close relative. The trail side pushes and the whole torso extends before the ball. The club rises with the chest.

Casting. The wrist angle releases early in the downswing, so the radius reaches full length well before the ball. The club reaches its lowest point behind the ball and is climbing by the time it gets there. Reverse pivot. Weight moves to the lead side going back and to the trail side coming down, so at impact the body is falling away from the target. The centre of the arc goes backwards, and so does low point. The full pattern is in The Reverse Pivot.

Ball position. The simplest one, and worth checking first because it costs nothing. A ball played too far forward in the stance can sit past a low point that would otherwise be perfectly good. If your strike changes dramatically when the ball moves an inch back, that was the problem.

How do I see my low point on video?

Film face-on, square to the golfer, and watch where the clubhead reaches its lowest point relative to the ball. If your camera shows the turf, the divot answers it directly: a divot starting behind the ball means low point is behind it. On a mat or a range tee, step through the frames around impact instead.

The frame-by-frame check:

  1. Face-on camera, square, roughly belt height, ball clearly in shot.
  2. Find impact — the frame where the clubhead is at the ball.
  3. Step forward two or three frames. Is the clubhead lower than it was at impact, or higher? Lower means low point is ahead of the ball, which is what you want with an iron. Higher means it has already bottomed out.
  4. Check the body at impact. Where is the lead shoulder relative to address? Has the pelvis moved toward the ball? Has the trail heel stayed down?

Frame rate matters here more than almost anywhere else in the swing, because the club is at its fastest through the strike. At 30 fps you may get one usable frame near impact and it may not be the one you need. Does topping have anything to do with slicing?

Often, yes — because several of the same causes produce both. Early extension, standing up and a reverse pivot all move the body out of position through impact, and a body out of position affects both where the low point sits and where the club path goes. Golfers frequently top and slice from one underlying pattern.

The two symptoms diverge in what they measure. Topping is about the vertical position of the arc bottom. Slicing is about the horizontal relationship between path and face.
