The Golf Swing Sequence: P1–P10 Explained

P1 to P10 gives every swing ten named checkpoints. Here is what the club and body do at each one, what to check, and the fault that shows up most.

The P-system splits a golf swing into ten numbered checkpoints, P1 through P10, from address to finish. Each one is a recognisable frame you can pause on and describe precisely. It turns "my swing feels off" into "the club is across the line at P4", which is a fault you can actually check and fix.

The skeleton is an idealised reference swing, not a recording of a real golfer. Angles and club speed are the model's values for that reference — treat them as a shape to compare against, not a measurement of anybody's swing.

Why do coaches number the swing P1 to P10?

Because a number removes the guesswork from a description. "Halfway back" means different things to different people; "P3" means one thing — lead arm parallel to the ground on the way up. Numbering the swing lets a coach, a video app and a golfer all point at the same frame and mean the same thing.

That precision matters more than it sounds. Almost every swing fault is really a fault about timing — something happening at the wrong moment, not something being wrong forever. Naming the moments is what makes the timing discussable.

It also makes video analysis tractable. Ten frames out of a few hundred is a manageable amount to look at, and those ten frames carry most of the information. What should P1 (address) look like?

P1 is the setup, before anything moves. Check three things: a neutral grip, a spine tilted forward from the hips rather than rounded, and weight roughly even between the feet. Everything downstream inherits from here, which is why a poor P1 shows up as a fault at P4 or P7.

The sample swing on the SwingOK landing page reads a 38° spine tilt and a 52/48 weight split at address — that is one example swing, not a target. Setup numbers vary with club, build and intent.

The most common P1 fault is ball position drifting without you noticing, which moves the low point relative to the ball and quietly changes everything about impact. It is also the cheapest fault in the swing to fix, because nothing is moving yet.

What is P2, the takeaway?

P2 is the frame where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way back, roughly hip height. The club, the hands and the chest should still be moving together as one unit, and the clubface should be square to the swing arc rather than hanging open or shut.

Down-the-line is the angle for this one. From behind, a clubhead that sits well inside the hands at P2 means the arms have pulled the club in and the chest has not turned with it. A clubhead outside the hands means the opposite.

The reason P2 gets so much attention is that it is the cheapest position to change. Nothing has happened yet at hip height — there is no speed, no stored angle, nothing to unwind. A takeaway correction costs you almost nothing, and it removes the need for a compensation later.

Most common fault at P2: the club rolls inside with the wrists while the body stays still. It is a small error, but it forces a compensation at P3 or P4 to get back on plane.

What is P3, halfway back?

P3 is the frame where the lead arm is parallel to the ground on the way up. The wrists should be fully set by now, so that the shaft points down at or near the ball. This is the last checkpoint before the top, and the plane the club is on here largely determines the plane at P4.

If the shaft points well outside the ball line at P3, the club is laid off. If it points well inside, the club is steep. Both are recoverable, but both cost you a compensation on the way down.

P3 is also the easiest place to see whether the chest is turning or the arms are lifting. If the hands have travelled high but the shoulders have barely moved, the backswing is being made by the arms alone, and the club will arrive at the top steep and disconnected from the body.

Most common fault at P3: the wrists have not set, so the club is still trailing the hands and the shaft points nowhere near the ball. That usually means the set has to happen later, in transition, where it interferes with the downswing.

What is P4, the top of the backswing?

P4 is the top: the moment the club stops going back and before it starts down. Check the shaft's relationship to the target line, the amount of shoulder turn, and — most usefully — how much the hips have turned relative to the shoulders. That difference is separation, and it is what the downswing spends.

In the SwingOK sample swing, the shoulders are turned 92° at the top and the hips 51°. The coach note flags the hips as roughly 7° over-rotated for that golfer, which is an illustration of how the readout works, not a universal number. What is general is the principle: hips that turn nearly as far as the shoulders leave nothing stored to unwind.

Two shaft faults live here. Across the line is the shaft pointing right of the target at the top (for a right-hander) and tends to feed an inside-out path. Most common fault at P4: over-rotating the hips to feel like a bigger backswing. It produces a long-looking swing with no stretch in it. A trail-hip-against-a-wall drill is the standard patterning fix — the hip turns without sliding into the wall.

What is P5, the transition?

P5 is early in the downswing, conventionally the frame where the lead arm is parallel to the ground on the way down. Check the order: the lower body should already be unwinding toward the target while the club is still falling. The club should shallow — drop onto a flatter plane than going back.

Transition is the single highest-leverage moment in the swing, and it lasts a fraction of a second. Everything about the strike is decided in the frames between P4 and P6.

Most common fault at P5: the arms and shoulders start down first. The club steepens instead of shallowing, and the only path available into the ball is out-to-in. That is the over-the-top move and it is the leading cause of a slice.

What is P6, delivery?

P6 is the shaft parallel to the ground again, this time on the way down — the mirror of P2. The hands should be leading the clubhead, with the wrist angle from the backswing still largely intact. This is where you can see whether lag has been kept or spent.

The shaft's direction at P6 is a good preview of club path. Pointing outside the ball line predicts an out-to-in path; pointing well inside it predicts in-to-out. Down-the-line video reads this cleanly and face-on video does not.

Most common fault at P6: the wrist angle has already been thrown away — casting. The clubhead has passed the hands, the low point moves behind the ball, and you arrive with added loft and no compression. See casting vs lag for the mechanism and what it costs.

What happens at P7, impact?

P7 is impact, the only position that touches the ball and the only one the ball responds to. Check shaft lean, clubface angle, hip and chest rotation, and where the weight is. Everything the other nine positions do is in service of arriving here in a repeatable, square, forward-leaning delivery.

Impact does not look like address. The hips are open, the chest is turning through, the hands are ahead of the ball and the weight has moved to the lead side. The SwingOK sample swing reads 7° of forward shaft lean and a face 1.4° open at P7 — again, that is one swing's readout, offered as an example of what the measurement looks like.

Most common fault at P7: flipping — the hands stopping and the clubhead passing them, so the shaft leans backwards at impact. That adds loft, moves the low point behind the ball and produces thin and fat strikes from the same swing. What is P8, the release?

P8 is the shaft parallel to the ground after impact, past the ball. The clubhead has rotated so the toe is turning over, the arms are extending down the target line, and the chest is still turning. It is the first honest look at what the clubface did through the strike.

Release is a result, not an action. A face that rotates too little through P8 usually indicates a body that stopped turning, which leaves the hands to hold on and the face open. A face that rotates too much usually means the hands took over from a body that decelerated.

It is worth watching P8 in motion rather than as a still. A frozen frame tells you where the toe is pointing; the frames either side tell you how fast it got there, which is the part that separates a face rotating naturally from a face being saved by the hands.

Most common fault at P8: the lead arm folding and the elbow pulling in and up — the chicken wing. It kills extension and it is generally a symptom of a stalled body rather than an arm problem. See the chicken wing.

What is P9, follow-through?

P9 is the frame in the follow-through where the arm is parallel to the ground again, on the target side. By now the weight should be substantially on the lead foot and the chest should be well past the ball. Nothing here changes the shot, but everything here reports on what happened before it.

That is what makes P9 useful. Balance and weight transfer at P9 are the cheapest evidence you have that the sequence worked. A golfer hanging back on the trail foot at P9 did not transfer at P5, and that is where the fix belongs.

Most common fault at P9: weight still on the trail side. It is the signature of a reverse pivot or an arms-driven downswing, and it usually appears alongside a low point behind the ball.

What is P10, the finish?

P10 is the finish: fully rotated, balanced, belt buckle to the target, weight on the lead foot, trail toe down. It has no effect on the ball, which has long since left. It is a diagnostic snapshot — the position you can only reach if the swing before it sequenced properly.

If you cannot hold your finish for three seconds, something earlier was out of balance. That is a genuinely useful signal and it costs nothing to check.

Finish position is also the easiest thing to check without any equipment at all. You do not need a camera, a frame counter or a measurement to know whether you finished balanced with the weight on your lead foot, which makes it a reasonable habit to keep between video sessions.

Most common fault at P10: falling backwards or stepping off to keep balance, which points back to weight that never fully moved to the lead side.

Are P1 to P10 a swing method?

No. They are a measurement framework. The swing is a continuous motion of roughly a second, and the ten positions are frames sampled from it — useful for describing and comparing, useless as a set of poses to hit one at a time. Copying positions statically produces a swing that looks right and moves badly.

The distinction matters in practice. If your club is across the line at P4, "put the club in a better place at the top" is the wrong instruction, because the position at P4 came from the takeaway and the wrist set at P2 and P3. Fix the cause, then re-check the checkpoint.

Treat a bad position as evidence, not as a target. The question is always "what earlier movement produced this?", never "how do I hold this frame better?"

Which positions should I check first?

Start at P7, because impact is what the ball responds to. Then check P4, because the top sets up what the downswing has to do. Then look at P2 and P6 down-the-line to see the club's plane going back and coming down. Four positions covers most amateur faults.

Working in that order stops you chasing cosmetic problems. A takeaway that looks slightly inside is irrelevant if impact is square and compressed; a beautiful P4 is worth nothing if you cast from P5.

The other principle: fix the earliest fault in the chain, then re-shoot. Positions downstream of a corrected fault often correct themselves, and if you change three things at once you will not know which one moved the number. That is the core idea in how to read your swing data.

How do I check my own P positions on video?

Film one swing at a high frame rate, from a fixed camera, and step through it frame by frame. Use down-the-line for P2, P4 and P6, and face-on for P1, P7 and P10. Two clips of the same swing, filmed from the two standard angles, cover all ten positions.

Camera position matters as much as frame rate. A phone at the wrong height or angle will make an on-plane swing look steep, and no amount of careful frame-stepping recovers from that.
