How to Film Your Golf Swing: Camera Setup Guide
Film a swing your phone can actually analyse: camera placement for down-the-line and face-on, lens height, distance, frame rate and the mistakes to avoid.
Put the phone on the target line behind your hands for down-the-line, or straight out from the ball for face-on. Set the lens at hand height, six to eight feet away, in landscape, filming at the highest frame rate your phone offers. Everything else is detail.

Why does camera position matter more than camera quality?
Because every measurement taken from a video is a measurement of a projection. A 2D frame flattens a 3D swing, and where you stand decides how it flattens. A ten-degree error in lens height or line can invent a plane change that never happened. A cheaper phone in the right spot beats a flagship in the wrong one.
Think of it this way. Your swing is real and fixed. The video is a shadow of it, and you are choosing where the light sits. Move the light and the shadow changes shape while the swing does not. What are the two camera angles, and what does each one show?
Down-the-line looks along the target line from behind you and shows swing plane, club path, shaft position, spine angle and how the arms and body relate in depth. Face-on looks at you from the front and shows tempo, weight shift, low point, shaft lean, head movement and the width of the swing arc.
Neither is optional if you want a complete picture. They are orthogonal views of the same motion, and each is blind to what the other sees best.

If you only ever film one, film down-the-line: most of the swing faults amateurs care about — over the top, a steep shaft, a lost posture — are plane and path problems. But film both if you can, in the same session, hitting the same club. The pair is worth far more than two of either.

Where exactly do you put the phone for a down-the-line swing video?
On the target line extended backwards, behind your hands rather than behind the ball, with the lens at roughly hand height at address. Stand the phone in landscape, six to eight feet back, with the lens pointing straight down the line — not angled in towards you.
Three details do the work here:
- On the line, not off it. Walk from the ball away from the target, in a straight line, and set the phone down on that line. If the camera drifts inside or outside the line, the club will appear to travel on a path it never took.
- Behind the hands, not behind the ball. The convention that makes footage comparable is to line the lens up with the hands at address, roughly over the butt of the grip, not over the ball. Filming from behind the ball flattens the apparent plane.
- Lens at hand height. Not on the ground, not at your head. Hand height is the reference that most instruction footage uses, and it is the height at which the shaft's real angle reads honestly.
A golf bag works as a tripod. Lean the phone against it, check the frame, and do not move the bag between swings — a setup that changes between clips destroys any comparison you were hoping to make.
Where do you put the phone for a face-on swing video?
Perpendicular to the target line, straight out from the ball, so the lens looks at the middle of your chest. Set it at mid-chest to belt height, level, six to eight feet away, in landscape. The ball should sit at the horizontal centre of the frame, not off to one edge.
The face-on angle is the one people most often shoot from too far forward or too far back along the line. If the camera creeps towards the target, your hips look more open at impact than they are. If it creeps behind, they look more closed. Stand behind the phone and check that the ball, the lens and your sternum form a straight line square to the target.
Belt-to-chest height is a compromise. Lower emphasises the lower body and the low point of the arc; a little higher gives a cleaner read on the shoulders and head. Pick one and stay with it, because the value of your footage comes from being able to compare August to March.
How far should the camera be from the ball?
Six to eight feet for a mid-iron with a phone's standard lens is the usual answer. Close enough that your body fills a decent share of the frame, far enough that the clubhead stays inside the frame at the top of the backswing and again at the end of the follow-through. Check both extremes before you record.
The failure mode is framing for address. Address is the narrowest moment of the swing. If you fill the frame at address, the club will leave the picture at the top, and the two frames analysis depends on most — the top of the backswing and impact — will be missing or cropped.
A quick way to set it: take the club to the top and hold it there while you look at the phone screen. Adjust until there is a visible margin of air above the clubhead. Then do the same at the finish. If both fit, address will look small and slightly lost in the frame, and that is correct.
Longer clubs need more room than wedges. Driver swings are wider and taller, so add a foot or two. Avoid your phone's ultra-wide lens if it has one: the barrel distortion at the edges bends straight lines, and a bent shaft line is a fake plane reading.
Why does lens height matter more than anything else?
Because the camera's height sets the angle you are looking down the shaft from, and that angle is exactly what a plane measurement reads. Raise the lens and the swing looks flatter. Lower it and the same swing looks steeper. The club never changed — only the projection did.
This is the single most common reason two videos of the same golfer disagree. A phone leaning against a bag on the ground sits maybe eighteen inches high. A phone on a five-foot tripod sits at chest height. Film the same swing from both and you can convince yourself you changed your plane over the winter when you only changed your tripod.
The same effect hits everything measured against a line: spine angle, shaft angle at P2 and P6, whether the club "gets stuck". Down-the-line, hand height is the standard. Face-on, mid-chest to belt is the standard. They are conventions rather than laws of physics, but conventions are what make your clips comparable — to each other and to instruction footage.

How can you test a camera setup without going to the range?
Change one variable at a time and watch what happens to the picture. What frame rate should you film at?
Film at the highest rate your phone supports — 240 fps on recent iPhones, 120 fps on many others. At 60 fps a frame lasts about 16.7 ms and impact falls between frames; at 240 fps a frame lasts about 4.2 ms, so you get roughly four times as many samples through the fastest part of the swing.
That matters because the positions worth measuring happen where the club is moving fastest. Impact, shaft lean at impact, and clubface orientation are all decided in a window a few milliseconds wide. At 60 fps that window is usually not sampled at all, and any number you read is interpolation dressed as measurement.
High frame rate has a cost: shorter exposure per frame, so the image is darker. That is why frame rate and lighting are the same decision, not two separate ones. Film 240 fps in poor light and you get four times the frames and a quarter of the usable detail in each.

How should you light a swing video?
Bright, flat, even light — outdoors on an overcast day is close to ideal. Keep the sun behind the camera rather than behind you, so you are lit rather than silhouetted. Indoors, more light beats better settings every time, because a high frame rate gives each frame very little time to gather any.
Backlighting is the classic ruin. A golfer against a bright sky becomes a dark outline: joints vanish, the clubface disappears, and pose estimation loses the wrists first. Turn the setup ninety degrees so the light falls across you instead.
Hard low sun creates the opposite issue — long shadows that a tracker can mistake for limbs, and blown-out highlights on the shaft. Overcast is genuinely the best golf-filming weather there is.
Indoor nets are the hardest case: dim, mixed light and often a dark background. If you film indoors, add light on the golfer rather than the net, and expect to drop to 120 fps to keep the image usable. Also watch for flicker — some lights pulse at mains frequency, and at high frame rates that shows up as bands rolling through the video.
What background works best?
A plain, contrasting, uncluttered one. A single-colour net, a fence, a wall, an empty patch of turf and sky. What you want is a clear separation between your body and everything behind it, with nothing moving in the frame except you.
Trees swaying, other golfers walking through, a busy driving range with bays and yardage signs — all of it gives a pose model shapes to confuse with limbs, and gives you a harder time seeing the club yourself. If the range is busy, angle the camera so the background behind you is the emptiest thing available.
Clothing counts as background in practice. Wear something that contrasts with what is behind you, and prefer a fitted top to a loose one: baggy fabric moves independently of the arm inside it, which is one of the honest limits of camera-based tracking. How do you keep the phone steady?
Any stable object works, so long as it does not move between swings. A golf bag, a tripod, a phone clamp on an alignment stick, a bench. What matters is that the camera is fixed for the whole session, because a camera that shifts turns your own movement and the camera's movement into one indistinguishable signal.
Hand-held footage is worse than most people expect. The phone drifts a few degrees between clips, and every angle you measure inherits that drift. Slow motion also exaggerates handshake, so a clip that looked fine at normal speed judders in playback.
Two practical points. First, block the phone so a gust or a nudge cannot topple it — a bag is heavy and wide, which is why it works. Second, if you use a tripod, mark its leg positions and height once and note them, so you can rebuild the same setup next time in twenty seconds.
Do you need a second person to film you?
No. A propped phone films better footage than a friend does, because it does not move, does not track you, and does not reframe halfway through. Set it, walk in, hit, walk out. Trimming a long clip afterwards costs less than a session of inconsistent hand-held angles.

What mistakes make footage impossible to analyse?
The recurring ones are: filming in portrait, standing off the target line, setting the lens too high or too low, framing so tightly that the club leaves the picture, backlighting yourself, hand-holding the phone, and using the ultra-wide lens. Each of them either hides a key frame or bends a line you are about to measure.
- Portrait orientation. A golf swing is wide. Portrait crops the club out of both ends of the swing and wastes resolution on grass and sky.
- Off the target line. The apparent club path is a projection; move off the line and you invent path numbers.
- Wrong lens height. Fakes plane and spine angle, as above. The most expensive mistake on the list.
- Framed for address. Loses the top of the backswing, which is one of the two frames you most wanted.
- Backlit. Kills contrast on the shaft and the hands.
- Hand-held. Adds camera motion to body motion and makes clips incomparable.
- Ultra-wide lens. Straight lines curve near the frame edges, so shaft angles read wrong.
- 60 fps in dim light because it looked brighter. Understandable, but you lose impact entirely. Add light instead.
- Changing the setup between clips. The only thing worse than a wrong setup is an inconsistent one.
How do you check the framing before you hit?
Record one rehearsal swing without a ball, then watch it back at full speed and again slowly. Confirm four things: the clubhead is inside the frame at the top and at the finish, the horizon is level, your whole body is visible, and you can clearly see the hands and the shaft.
Thirty seconds of checking saves a bucket of unusable footage. Do it once per session, and again if you change clubs from a wedge to a driver, since the driver swing needs more room in every direction.
Then keep a record. A note on your phone with distance, height, angle and frame rate — or a photo of the setup itself — is the difference between a swing library and a folder of unrelated videos.
What should you do with the footage once you have it?
Look at three or four specific frames rather than watching the whole swing on a loop. Address, the top of the backswing, halfway down, and impact tell you nearly everything. Watching the swing at full speed repeatedly feels productive and teaches you very little.
