How to Fix a Hook

A hook is the mirror image of a slice: the clubface pointing left of the direction the club is travelling at impact. What causes a hook in golf?

The pull-hook is the nastiest to diagnose because it shares a path with the pull-slice. Golfers who go over the top and then learn to release their hands hard can flip between the two on consecutive swings, with the same path and opposite faces.

Is a hook really the better miss?
Only partly. A hook is often struck more solidly than a slice and flies further, which is the origin of the saying. But hook spin makes the ball run out after landing, so it finishes deeper into trouble, and a snap hook is one of the lowest, least controllable shots in golf.

Which drills fix a hook?
Match the drill to the cause you identified. Grip changes need setup repetition rather than swing changes. Over-rotating hands need slow, quiet-hands rehearsals at half speed. A stalled body needs rotation-through drills. An exaggerated in-to-out path needs a gate placed to catch an overly rightward approach into the ball.
These are movement-patterning drills — slow repetitions of a motion, not physical training.
- Grip reset reps. Set a neutral lead hand showing two knuckles, hit one ball, take your hands off the club, reset. Twenty repetitions. You are patterning the setup, not the swing.
