Wrist Flexion, Extension and the Clubface

Bowed and cupped are flexion and extension. What each does to the clubface, how the wrist changes from P4 to P7, and why the face rules start direction.

Flexion is the lead wrist bending so the palm moves toward the inside of the forearm — the "bowed" look. Extension is the back of the hand moving toward the top of the forearm — "cupped". More extension tends to open the clubface; more flexion tends to close it. The face then decides where the ball starts.

What are wrist flexion and extension in the golf swing?

Flexion bends the lead wrist so the palm approaches the front of the forearm; the back of the hand and the forearm form a slight arch, which golfers call bowed. Extension does the opposite: the back of the hand rises toward the top of the forearm, forming a visible cup at the wrist. They are two directions on one axis.

The terms come from anatomy, which is why they can feel backwards at first. Flexion is named for the palm side of the hand: the wrist "flexes" when the palm closes toward the forearm. Because the clubface is attached to the hands, that same motion rotates the face toward closed.

What is the difference between wrist hinge and wrist flexion?

They are different axes. Flexion and extension move the hand toward the palm or the back of the forearm. Radial and ulnar deviation — the "hinge" — move the hand toward the thumb or toward the little finger. Hinge sets the club upward in the backswing; flexion and extension rotate the face.

Radial deviation is the thumb-side movement that cocks the club up as you swing back. Ulnar deviation is the little-finger-side movement that unhinges it coming down. That axis is what most golfers mean when they say "wrist set" or "wrist hinge", and it is the axis the lag angle lives on — see casting vs lag.

The two axes are easy to confuse because they happen at the same joint, at the same time, in a swing that also rotates the forearms. But they do different jobs. Hinge mostly affects where the clubhead is; flexion and extension mostly affect where the face points. When somebody says "I set my wrists early", they are describing hinge. When somebody says "my wrist is cupped at the top", they are describing extension.

How does lead wrist position affect the clubface?

Directly. The face is bolted to the shaft, the shaft to the grip, and the grip to your lead hand, so any rotation of that hand rotates the face with it. More extension at the top tends toward an open face; more flexion tends toward a closed one. The relationship is a tendency, not an equation.

It is a tendency because two other things are in the loop. Grip is one: how you hold the club sets what a "flat" wrist actually delivers, so a strong grip with a flat wrist and a weak grip with a bowed wrist can produce similar face angles. Forearm rotation is the other: the forearms can supinate or pronate and change the face without the wrist angle changing at all.

Which is why "get more flexion" is not a universal fix. What matters is the face angle that arrives at the ball, and the wrist is the most direct dial that influences it. Two players can arrive square from very different-looking wrists.

How do the wrist conditions change from P4 to P7?

They change continuously. At P4, the top of the backswing, the lead wrist typically sits somewhere between flat and extended. Through P6 it usually moves toward less extension. By P7, impact, most good deliveries show a lead wrist that is flatter or slightly flexed compared with where it was at the top.

The general direction of travel is toward reduced extension as the downswing proceeds. A wrist that stays as cupped at impact as it was at the top has, in effect, kept the face open all the way through and added loft at the same time.

That last part is the link to the vertical delivery. Reducing extension moves the handle ahead of the clubhead, which is the same thing as forward shaft lean at impact — the two are describing one wrist condition from two different camera angles.

The numbers here are not something to eyeball from a phone at 30 frames per second. Wrist angles change fast in the last few frames before impact, which is why what 240 fps shows that 60 fps misses matters more for this measurement than for almost any other.

Why is the clubface the dominant factor in start direction?

Because the ball is only in contact with the face for well under a millisecond, and in that time the face's orientation is what points it. For a full shot, start direction follows the face closely, with a smaller pull toward the club path. The path then determines curve, by how far it sits from the face.

This is the standard ball-flight model, and it is worth being clear that it is a model — a simplification that assumes a centred strike and ignores gear effect, loft delivery and conditions. The practical consequence: your ball's start line is a readout of your face angle. If the ball starts right of target, the face was open at impact, whatever the swing felt like.
