Do You Need a Launch Monitor?

Launch monitors tell you what the ball did, not why your body made it happen. Here is what they measure, where they help, and where a phone camera is better.

If you want to know your carry distances, your gapping and your spin, a launch monitor is the right tool and nothing else substitutes for it. If you want to know why your swing produces those numbers, it is the wrong tool — ball data records the outcome, not the movement that caused it.

What does a launch monitor actually measure?

The ball, first and foremost: ball speed, launch angle, spin rate and spin axis, and from those it computes carry, total distance and shot shape. Many units also measure or estimate club delivery — club path, face angle, attack angle and club speed — but the ball numbers are the primary, most directly measured output.

It is worth separating those two groups, because they are not equally reliable across devices. Ball data is what the sensor sees most directly. Club data is either measured by a separate part of the system or inferred from the ball's behaviour, and the confidence in it varies a great deal between categories of device.

The derived numbers — carry, total, apex, descent angle — are model outputs. The device measures launch conditions and then applies a flight model, with assumptions about air density, altitude and the ball. That is not a criticism; it is how the category works. It just means "carry distance" is a calculation, not an observation.

What can a launch monitor not tell you?

Why your body produced the shot. It can tell you the club path was four degrees out to the right and the face was open to it. It cannot tell you whether that came from early extension, a stalled pivot, a grip change or a ball position error. Those causes live in the body.

This is the distinction that decides whether you need one. Ball and club data describe delivery — the state of the club and ball at and after impact. Body mechanics describe how you got there. Two golfers can produce identical launch monitor numbers from visibly different swings, and one swing may be repeatable while the other is not.

There is a practical version of the problem too. A monitor can tell you your path number is drifting. It cannot tell you whether the fix is in your transition, your pressure pattern or your setup, so a session can turn into guessing at causes while the numbers move around. That is where video does the work a monitor cannot — the reason the P1–P10 positions and shoulder and hip turn are measured from frames rather than from ball flight.

When is a phone camera the better tool?

Whenever the question is about your body. Sequencing, pressure, spine angle, rotation, low point, club position at a given moment — all of it lives in the video and none of it lives in ball data. A camera also costs nothing, works on any range, and gives you a record you can compare over months.

Video is the right instrument for questions like:

  • Is my transition sequenced from the ground up, or does the upper body start it?
  • Where is the club at halfway back and halfway down?
  • Am I extending early through impact?
  • Where is my low point relative to the ball?
  • Has my shoulder-to-hip separation changed since last month?

The requirements are modest but real: a stable phone, a correct camera position, and enough frame rate that the fast parts of the swing are not a blur — which is what 240 fps is for.

When is a launch monitor the better tool?

When the question is about distance, gapping, spin or practising indoors. If you need to know how far your 8-iron actually carries, how big the gap is between your 4-iron and your hybrid, or whether your wedge spin has fallen off, nothing you can see on video will answer it. Those are ball questions.

The cases where it is genuinely the right purchase:

  • Gapping. Working out real carry numbers for every club, and finding the yardages you have no club for. This is the strongest argument for owning one.
  • Indoor practice. Hitting into a net with no ball flight to watch, a monitor is the only feedback available.
  • Equipment decisions. Comparing shafts, lofts or ball models on numbers rather than impressions.
  • Spin. You cannot see spin rate. On wedges and with driver spin, it matters and it is invisible without measurement.
  • Verifying a change stuck. Once video has told you what to change, ball data confirms whether the outcome moved.

If you recognise your own practice in that list — especially the gapping one — buy the monitor. It is doing something no camera can do.

What is the difference between radar and photometric launch monitors?

Radar units track the ball in flight using Doppler radar and need space behind and in front of the strike to see enough of the flight. Photometric units use high-speed cameras to photograph the ball and club just around impact, so they need much less flight distance but usually want controlled lighting and a fixed position.

Neither approach is universally better. The honest way to choose is to start from where you will actually use it. Mostly outdoors on a range with open space in front: radar suits you. Mostly indoors in a garage or a bay: photometric suits you. Devices at different price points within each category also differ in how much club data they report and how confident that data is, which is worth checking against your actual questions before buying.

How much should you spend on a launch monitor?

That depends entirely on which numbers you need, and this article will not quote figures or model names — the market moves and prices shift. Think in tiers instead. Entry devices report a limited set of ball numbers. Mid-tier devices add more ball data and some club data. Professional devices measure club delivery directly and are used for fitting.

Three questions that decide the tier for you:

  1. Do you need club data, or only ball data? If your only real question is "how far does this club go", ball data is enough, and the entry tier answers it. Club path and face angle push you up a tier and add real cost.
  2. Indoors or outdoors? This decides the technology before it decides the budget.
  3. How much accuracy do you need to trust the decision? Gapping tolerates some noise. Equipment fitting does not.

Buy for the question you actually have. A device that reports more numbers than you can use is not better value; it is just more numbers. And check what any given device measures directly versus what it estimates, because that distinction is where accuracy claims usually live.

Should you buy a launch monitor or use video?

If your misses are consistent and you know what your swing does but not how far it goes, buy the monitor. If your ball flight is unpredictable and you do not know what your body is doing, start with video. Most golfers who are still working on the motion get more from a camera, and the monitor becomes useful later.

They are not competitors. They answer different questions, and used together they close the loop: video shows you what changed in the movement, the monitor shows you what that change did to the ball. Neither one alone gives you both halves.
